Australian law doesn't let companies offer online poker to people in Australia, but it doesn't punish the players themselves. Below are the partner rooms that accept Australians, ranked by the rakeback you get, followed by how the rules work.

How the law works in Australia

Offering is banned, playing isn’t. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001, tightened in 2017, makes it illegal to offer online casino games and online poker to people in Australia. Licensed Australian sites can only offer things like sports betting and lotteries. The law is aimed at the companies: it doesn’t make it an offence for you to play.

ACMA blocks illegal sites. The Australian Communications and Media Authority asks internet providers to block sites that offer prohibited gambling to Australians, and it has blocked hundreds of them. Blocked sites often come back under new addresses.

International rooms

Only a few of our partner rooms accept Australian players, and they’re the ones in the list on this page. They’re international, work under their own licences and check your location when you sign up. Without an Australian licence, you can’t turn to an Australian regulator if something goes wrong, which is why we only list rooms we work with directly and keep track of their payouts.

Deposits and withdrawals

Crypto is the usual way in and out: Bitcoin and USDT are accepted at all three rooms. Tables play in US dollars, so your exchange converts from Australian dollars. Before you send crypto, check the network in the room’s cashier and start with a small amount. See our guide to Bitcoin poker sites.

Sports betting and horse racing

Legal with an Australian licence. Betting on sport and racing before the event starts is legal online with a bookmaker, tote or exchange licensed by an Australian state or territory. ACMA keeps a register where you can check any operator.

No in-play betting online. Once a match has started, licensed bookmakers can only take your bet by phone or in person. Online casino games and online poker are banned for every provider, licensed or not.

No credit cards or crypto. Since 11 June 2024, you can’t fund an online betting account with a credit card or with crypto.

Offshore bookmakers are a risk for you too. A bookmaker without an Australian licence breaks federal law by taking your bets. In New South Wales, the Unlawful Gambling Act also makes it an offence for you to bet online on an Australian race with a bookmaker you know, or should know, is unlicensed. None of our partner sportsbooks accepts Australian customers, so we don’t list any here.

Taxes

As a general rule, recreational players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings in Australia, poker included. If poker is your business, the rules can be different, so check with a tax adviser.

Before you play

Set a budget and stick to it. BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, only covers licensed Australian services, so if you’ve signed up to it, don’t use international rooms either.
