How online poker works in Canada
The provinces are in charge. Under the Criminal Code, each province conducts and manages gambling in its own territory. That’s why the rules change depending on where you live.
Ontario. Since April 2022, Ontario has had an open, regulated online market run by iGaming Ontario. Players located in Ontario should use the sites registered there; many international rooms don’t accept Ontario residents.
Alberta. Alberta launched Canada’s second regulated online market on July 13, 2026, overseen by the AGLC. For now, poker on Alberta’s licensed sites is played only against other players located in Alberta.
The other provinces. British Columbia, Quebec and the rest of the country offer online gambling through government-run sites. Many players in these provinces also use international rooms that accept Canadians.
Deposits and withdrawals
Crypto is the most common way to deposit at international rooms, and several of them also accept cards and e-wallets. Rooms usually play in US dollars, so your bank or exchange converts from Canadian dollars. Before you send crypto, check the network in the room’s cashier and start with a small amount. See our guide to Bitcoin poker sites.
Taxes
As a general rule, the gambling winnings of recreational players aren’t taxed in Canada, but people who play poker as a business may have to declare that income. Talk to a tax professional about your situation.
