How to Choose an Online Poker Room: 7 Criteria to Get It Right in 2026

6 min read · Published

Updated on October 18, 2026.

To choose an online poker room, start with the basics: it needs to accept players from your country and the payment method you use, such as crypto, cards or e-wallets. Then compare the rake, the rakeback, the traffic at the tables and the safety rules. The 7 criteria below help you decide without falling for a flashy bonus promise.

Quick summary

  • First, check whether the room accepts players from your country and which regulator issued its license.
  • Crypto (USDT and Bitcoin), cards and e-wallets are the payment methods most international players use.
  • Rake is what the room charges you to play, and rakeback pays part of it back: compare the two together.
  • Table traffic, opponent skill level and HUD rules can vary a lot from one room to another.

The 7 criteria, one by one

1. The room accepts players from your country and is licensed

Not every room accepts sign-ups from every country, and some change their rules without notice. Read the list of restricted countries in the terms of use before opening an account. Don’t use a VPN or a fake address to get around this: the room can close your account and withhold your balance.

Then check the footer of the site for where the room is licensed — Malta, the Isle of Man or Curaçao, for example — and see if the license number shows up on the regulator’s website. A room that doesn’t disclose its license is a red flag.

2. Deposits and withdrawals through the method you use

For international players, the most common options are crypto — mainly USDT and Bitcoin — along with cards and e-wallets. Check the minimum amount, the fees and the processing time for both deposits and withdrawals. A room that credits your deposit instantly but takes ten days to pay out is tying up your money.

If you prefer paying by card or e-wallet, see our guide to fast online poker deposits. If you prefer crypto, compare poker rooms that accept Bitcoin.

3. Table traffic at your usual times

Open the lobby before you deposit and see how many tables are active at your stakes and during the hours you play. For tournaments, check the week’s guaranteed prize pools (GTD).

4. Rake and rakeback: how much comes back to you

Rake is the fee the room charges: a percentage of the pot in cash games, capped per hand, and a portion of the buy-in in tournaments. Get the full breakdown in our guide to online poker rake.

Rakeback pays back part of that cost. For regular players, the difference between 20% and 40% rakeback usually ends up worth more than a welcome bonus. See what rakeback is and how to calculate it and run the numbers in our rakeback calculator.

5. Opponent skill level and software rules

Rooms with plenty of recreational players tend to have more balanced tables for beginners. Some use anonymous tables or ban third-party tools. GGPoker, for example, has banned HUDs and third-party trackers since October 15. If you use a HUD, check the rule before you deposit.

6. The room’s software and mobile app

Test the room’s software, or the browser version, before you deposit. Check whether it runs smoothly on your computer and whether there’s an app for Android and iPhone with readable tables. Some apps aren’t in the official stores: in that case, only download them through the link on the room’s own website.

7. A bonus with clear terms

Check three things: how much rake you need to generate to unlock the amount, how many days you have, and whether the bonus is released gradually or all at once. If you’re not going to hit that volume in time, the bonus isn’t worth much.

Comparison: rooms open to international players

How to test a room before you deposit more

  1. Sign up with your real details. The name needs to match your ID and your payment account.
  2. Send in your documents right away if the room asks for them. Putting off verification tends to delay your first withdrawal.
  3. Deposit a small amount and play for a few days at your stakes.
  4. Request a small withdrawal and note how long it takes.

If everything goes smoothly, build up your balance gradually. If a withdrawal is delayed without explanation, stop depositing.

Check the rules where you live

Gambling laws differ from country to country, and they can change. In practice, only leave in the room the money you plan to play with, and follow any changes to the law where you live. Always pay from an account in your own name.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best online poker room for international players?

It depends on what you play and how you pay. Check whether the room accepts players from your country and whether it offers crypto, cards or e-wallets. Then compare how much rake each one charges and how much it gives back in rakeback. Our ranking lists the rooms that accept sign-ups from international players.

Is it safe to deposit at a poker room with crypto or an e-wallet?

The payment method is just how you pay. Safety depends on the room's license, its reputation and how it handles withdrawals. Before you deposit a large amount, make a small deposit and a small withdrawal.

Is it worth picking a room just for the bonus?

Almost never. At many rooms, the poker bonus is released gradually, based on the rake you generate, and it comes with a deadline. For players who grind regularly, rakeback usually ends up being worth more than the bonus over time.

Can new gambling laws affect my online poker account?

It depends on the country. Some countries have tightened their gambling rules recently, and in some cases the new rules target fixed-odds betting, such as sports betting, rather than poker played against other players. Rules can still change, so it's worth keeping an eye on the gambling laws where you live.

Can I have an account at more than one poker room?

Yes, plenty of players keep accounts at two or three rooms. What you can't do is hold two accounts at the same room — that breaks the terms of use and can get your balance frozen.
